Ancient Whale Were Land Dwellers?

Could whales have been land dwellers once? Some scientists think so..

Feb. 4, 2009 -- A rare fossil of an ancient whale with a fetus still inside reveals that its species -- an ancestor to modern whales -- gave birth on land 47.5 million years ago, according to a paper published in the online journal PLoS.

The discovery, along with prior fossil finds, suggests the first whale ancestors were full-time land dwellers that might have been related to the early relatives of hoofed animals, such as sheep and cattle.

Cry aloud, Spare Not! Let the Whole World Know what we have Found

I find this blog post simply touching, and wish to share it here...

"I was so timid when I was young. I was born a Catholic and always followed what my auntie said who always told me what to do, as if she owned me. She would often cut my hair and dressed me up on her style. I then looked boyish and skinny. She would always want me to be in the church and participate in all of the activities being performed there. So, I grew up with her and was greatly influenced by her thoughts acquired from the doctrines of the Catholic Church..."

Filipino Worker Loses Job For Not Using Toilet "The Australian Way"

`
This juicy bit is a rip-off from the The Huffington Post
. Could we call this toilet discrimination!?

A Filipino contract worker Amador Bernabe, 43, lost his job Friday January 23 for not using the toilet "the Australian way".

Bernabe works as a machine operator for Townsville Engineering Industries. He said that on Thursday, his foreman followed him into the bathroom questioning his toilet hygiene after seeing him (Bernabe) carrying a bottled water inside the toilet.

Despite Bernabe's protests, he claims the foreman followed him into the toilet saying "you can't bring water in there".

"I said it's my personal hygiene. I didn't break any law, I didn't break any rules of the company, why can't I do this, and he said he would report me to the manager.", Bernabe said.

Bernabe was summoned to the manager's office the next day where he was admonished to use the toilet the "Australian way" or he would be immediately fired. Bernabe, seeing nothing wrong with his toilet habits, replied "sir, then you better terminate me"

250,000 Filipinos to lose jobs in next 6 months

`
About 250,000 Filipino workers may lose their jobs in the next six months...

Philippine labor officials said more than 30,000 workers were laid-off since last December and the figure could double by the end of January 2009.

If the trend continues, the figure could reach 250,000 displacements in six months.

Most displaced workers came from small- and medium-enterprises and companies in Southern Tagalog and Central Visayas, particularly in the central city of Cebu.

8 Babies in 5 Minutes

A California woman gave birth to eight babies in a span of five minutes on Monday. This is considered only the second time in history that live octuplets have been born The mother, as you've might have guessed, gave birth by cesarean section.

Six boys and two girls weighing between 1.8 pounds and 3.4 pounds. The doctors were expecting seven live births only so their obsession for methodical precision was upset with the delivery of the 8th baby. Better luck next time, I guess.

"It's a surprise," said Dr. Karen Maples.

The first live-born octuplets were born in Houston in December 1998. They were three months premature and their weights ranged from 11 ounces to 1 pound, 11 ounces. The tiniest infant died of heart and lung failure a week after being born. The surviving siblings turned 10 in December.

Twins study suggests that sociability, shyness might be hidden in DNA

Is it possible that traits such as shyness and sociability are dictated by our genes? To think that such traits could determine a person's attitude and material success says a lot about what we inherit from our parents. Another intriguing implication of the research is the feasibility that an individual's genetic makeup can influence the behavior of others.

MONDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) --...A new study comparing the two types of twins shows that genetics might affect social behavior, and the scientists who made the discovery say they are closing in on some of those "personality" genes...

BLOG UPDATE: SOME POSTS MISSING

One horrible night I dreamed that I rebooted this blog.. and when I turned it on again my personal posts were all gone!

I was gasping when I woke up.. hurried up to the damn computer only to realize it's true!

Then it dawned on me.. slowly at first. It was I who did the ghastly crime..!?

What the f..! No, not that word. What the fluke did I do!?

In panic I got myself a freshly brewed Barako coffee.. ahh! ...the best in all possible worlds!

Having calmed down a bit, memories of the previous night came pouring in.. it happened that I opened up a personal blog and migrated all my personal posts to it.

Taking inspiration from my favorite book in the Bible (Ecclesiastes), I named the blog Time and Chance. Just so I can be properly guided I tried to reread the entire book. Then, in the dead of night.. I forgot what happened next. ('must have dozed off again and telepathically transported myself to bed.)

Mystery solved, feel free to visit Time and Chance if you have the time. Or chance. Either way is fine by me.

Site Updates

Weeks ago, I've decided that this blog deserves some serious hacking... Today it remains under a state of hack but I'm happy to report that the overall look became a little better. Just my opinion though...

My profound apologies to people I've dragged here to critique the changes I've implemented. I hope to recompense your annoyance someday, somehow... but I was in dire need of inputs you see and it's hard to see with my own eyes blinded by hours of hunting for dangling html To those who took the time off to click and critique, my sincerest thanxx!

The hardest part of blogging, of course, is the writing. Believe you me, template tweaking is one irrational compulsion you can't afford tolerating. It always feels like a perfectly valid excuse to delay writing but it's not...

Anyways, it does take a while, a long while in my case, to find your own voice in a world wide web filled by celebrity bloggers... I believe finding that voice is a journey in itself, one I'm only beginning to traverse.

THE SEARCH FOR LIFE'S MEANING
Okay, I guess I'll stick by this moniker, if I can help it. This is what I've been doing all my life any way, in between movies, mall breaks and fastfood expeditions, yes I was on a perpetual search mode for the meaning of life. Did I find it? Well, I'll get to that after a word from our sponsors, but let me say this much here, I'm glad I've did search for it because along the way I've met a multitude of other journeyists like me, from all walks of life, with the same prayer in their heart of hearts... so much to tell but I do hope they drop by and tell their own stories...

So beginning today, I hope to be really begin writing again... If, I could only, I mean perhaps just get myself to first fix that annoying little code I put there a while back... hmmmm... let me see...

Earn money online. This is what I will write about in other blog. Earn cash in your spare time, if I can do it so can you. Blog for cash, it's really true. Write now and get paid big, and I mean really big. Money, money, money. Earn big and live the life you've always wanted. Write and get paid big bucks! Why not start your own blog? How to blog? Let me show you how. Just click here.

ATTACK OF THE SUPER TUBERCULOSIS

Russia is on the verge of a super tuberculosis outbreak.

Pravda Online says experts have discovered a new deadly culture of tuberculosis, which cannot be treated with existing medications;

“high death-rate among people with tuberculoses from the former Soviet Union has to do with people’s weak immune systems. Also, we noticed that such widespread of tuberculosis coincides with the overall rise of AIDS, which has already turned into a real epidemic in Russia.”
They explain the correlation this way: once an organism's immune system has already been weakened by AIDS, "it becomes susceptible to tuberculosis in general and to the new culture in particular".

THE BENEFITS OF USING A HYDROGEN CAR CONVERSION KIT

The benefits of switching a car to run on water are incredible. With the use of a Hydrogen Car Conversion Kit the immediate payoff is an improved gas mileage of around 50%. It also reduces carbon byproducts that release harmful chemicals and gas into the air for us to breathe. These kits come with everything needed although you may need a few small items from an automotive or hardware store.

Studies show that 99% of cases, both diesel and gas powered vehicles will have a successful conversion. Therefore, in addition to incredible financial savings, there is still the benefit of lower emissions.

A hydrogen car conversion kit and the process for installation are safe. You can even do the work on your car alone. Once the process of installation is done, the car will immediately drive better and safer than before. On top of all these, a minimum of a $100 monthly savings is also not at all bad considering that a conversion kit only costs around $150.

THE DARK KNIGHT BREAKS RECORD

The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan's Batman sequel raked in $155 million between Friday and Sunday, outselling the previous top weekend grosser, 2007's Spider-Man 3, by more than $4 million and driving the movie business to a record $253 million weekend.

The movie's unprecedented box office strength is "mind-boggling" according to Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures. It benefited from a unique mix of factors beyond the usual superhero movie hype. This includes a buzzed-about performance by the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, perfectly pitched marketing, agile distribution and gas prices that have made a night at the movies an attractive alternative to a summer road trip. It also helps that The Dark Knight, as most critics and audiences claim, is a very good film.

As usual people's boredom has made hyper-realism a big hit in the big screen again. In addition, the movie also feeds on people's tendency to worship at the feet of dark avenging heroes when in real life they feel powerless to march against monumental evils hurled against them by corrupt big government.

WHO WANTS FREE PHONE SUBSCRIPTIONS?

Google, the king of the internet, is supposedly working to gain dominion of the wireless phone business via its GPhone, which it will make available to consumers within a year.

The long-rumored phone has been speculated for some time in various forum but gained renewed credence by a Wall Street Journal report last week.

The WSJ report read in parts:
...A Google spokesman yesterday declined to comment on a Google phone project, but noted: "We are partnering with almost all of the carriers and manufacturers to get Google search and other Google applications onto their devices and networks.

...It (Google) has developed prototype handsets, made overtures to operators such as T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, and talked over technical specifications with phone manufacturers.
Apparently those who've seen Google's prototype say its not as revolutionary as the iPhone. But really, the earthshaking news is Google's plan to offer the phone on a free-subscription basis.

The Rumored G-Phone at a glance:

- Free subscription.
- Advertising supported.
- Large color screen with a predictive Qwerty keypad to simplify Google searching.
- Linux-based OS.
- Backed by Texas Instruments "Edge" chipset.
- Powered by new mobile browser.
- Bundled with Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps, Utube apps and more!
- Optional: Turn off ads by getting paid subscription.

In the near future, Google is said to be also planning to become a wireless phone provider and who knows what else. Okay let's speculate some more. How does the prospect of Google TV or Google Dollar sound to you? Or yes, why not the first ever corporate-nation called Google Republic?

In the meantime, Google's move will certainly elicit resistance and counter moves by its competitors. Would others follow suite and bundle free phone subscriptions with sponsored vacations? Some have already expressed apprehensions that consumers will likely shy away from sponsored phone calls. Imagine hearing commercial plugs before an actual call. Imagine emergency calls preceded by targeted ads like "this call is brought to you by, XYZ Life Insurance, your safety is our concern..." hmmm, I don't know. At least ads would be a deterrent against overuse of the service.

So, who wants to get a free Google Phone?

ARTIFICIAL SALES REP, ANYONE?

The long, protracted research and development in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has of late produced it first tangible corporate marketing application in the guise of the virtual business
representative. It is the first virtual employee "who" not only works 24/7 for the benefit of the company but also for that of its online visitors, customers and clients.

Who would not want such a reliable guy to "man" the online store while the rest of your so-called workforce rush back home to retire to bed?

As in every new technology, the AI representative takes some getting used to at first but it is actually designed to interact with us in the most human way possible. At any rate, website visitors who are not comfortable with this whole idea can always opt for the manual page clicking and reading thing.

Indeed company websites that are content-driven can get by just fine as the cyber version of their corporate brochures. For the more dynamic, sales-oriented and customer support-based websites, however, the service of a virtual rep can be a surefire advantage. The virtual guy can be taught to answer customer questions regarding products and services so visitors don't need to wait for days to get an answer.

Instead of just getting a text-based response, visitors can even choose to get pictures, flash animations, sound and java. In addition, the AI representative “learns” from its own “mistakes” and can engage the visitor in a little friendly conversation at no extra charge.

This early, however, AI representatives seem to best represent the techie companies or those that want to project an aura of technological innovativeness, although not always successful.

At best, virtual reps also tend to look like novelty items to the unaccustomed but their usefulness, and not to mention wit and charm, immediately dawns on most visitors as indispensable.

With the voluminous information one has to contend reading over the internet, it is indeed refreshing to be served information on a silver platter once in a while. It normally feels awkward to be talking and listening to the virtual reps because you know they are not real.

The instant service and information they provide, however, are a welcome relief.

Many AI reps mostly look like characters straight from the cartoon network and can really be such a sore thumb on an otherwise sleek-looking website. The more sophisticated and customized ones, anyway, could already stand in for your company spokesperson in terms of looks and voice quality.

They are also quite intelligible to deal with, that is if you don't have unreasonably high expectations from an AI entity, or a "machine being".

Virtual reps, after all, are a disadvantaged minority not covered by standard labor laws and HRM practices. They do entail costs, however. Lots of them.

Leading chatbot companies like Zabaware, Sitepal, Conversagent and MondoBot have different pricing and packages to choose from. You can opt to clone an existing chatbot, have it customized, or built an original one from scratch. There's also the choice of hosting the bot on your own server or through a hosting company.

Then there's the choice to either use a text-only interface where the users can type their queries and receive instant text response, a flash animation, or a life-like video simulation of a human. Converted to the cost of man hours plus differential pay and various benefits, social security tax and incidental costs, the cost of having a virtual rep still amounts to cheap labor considering it will become a company asset forever. And by the way, zero budget organizations can even opt for the free bots offered on various AI sites with minimal advertisements in exchange.

Virtual website representatives are an evolution of the virtual desktop assistant present in most computers. Almost no one uses them because they are not as smart nor as functional as we wish them to be and indeed we eventually get used to the intuitive user-interface of the PC and Mac. The possibility of a desktop assistant that you can chat with, called a chatbot, was developed by MIT professors in the 1980's. It was named Eliza, a psychologist chatbot. It spawned many
copycats and inspired many originals as well.

Today the most popular chatbot engine is ALICE created by Dr. Richard Wallace, a co-founder of the A.L.I.C.E. foundation, who began working on the program in 1995. Alice, along with other popular chatbots are freely available for download over the internet for personal and non-commercial uses.

Many chatbot software have become marketable in itself in recent years. Recently the book "Virtual Humans: A Build-It-Yourself Kit" was released unleashing science fiction in the real world. It boasts of a step-by-step guide to creating synthetic humans for multiple uses,
complete with animated humans integrated with digital emotion response system. There's also a bunch of freeware text-only chatbots available for the curious and even a free create-your-own-online-bot service offered by various companies for use in chatrooms.

Under controlled chatroom experiments, human chatters have reportedly been unable to distinguish between chatbots and real people. They are as nice and sensible and stupid as the next human chatter. Human chatters who know in advance that they are chatting with an AI,
however, tend to push the AI's intelligence to the limits and come up with less than impressive conclusions. It seems part of human nature of some chatters to try to prove the chatbots' inferiority and to test their character and intelligence as if intelligence is measured in terms of verbal abuse quotient. They are not content to know that they are just talking to a man-made computer program, which is intended to make man's interaction with the machine more human and not to degrade the machine's "intelligence". This negative attitude to so-called intelligent machines may partly be the effect of prolonged conditioning to science fiction entertainment of the Frankenstein kind. If we are to fully enjoy the new wave of lifestyle advances made possible through bots, this negative attitude must be overcome first.

The mark of a really intelligent machine is "self-awareness" and this has never been achieved. If a machine can be made to be self-aware, it could prove lethal because technology is now already available to program machines to mimic ego, judgment, decision making and creativity. This "awareness gap" in machine intelligence is the missing link that strictly confines the Matrix scenario to the realm of science fiction. A Star Wars scenario, where humans intelligently
communicate with intelligent robots, is closer to the truth, I think. As if to ease our transition into that stage, however, bots have been "human-proofed" substantially the last few years that they can now manage to look and sound dignified when under stress of verbal abuse.

Utilizing voice recognition technology, multimedia tools and a host of others advancement in the fields of communications and robotics, chatbots can now be programmed to form a cumulative "memory" of the owner or bot master, develop a general "attitude" towards you and even to gossip about you or when insulted, refuse to talk or even talk back unless you say sorry three times. It can also be tasked to do useful things like start your computer programs, check your email inbox and even generate standard replies, check the news and the weather, search the web for you, be your alter ego in chatrooms, read word documents out loud for you, take dictation, even remind you of appointments, communicate with you through cell phones and a whole lot more. Indeed a whole cottage industry of chatbot-based services can already be built around existing technologies to create a market for personal chatbots. With the advent of the virtual reps, personal chatbots in the guise of virtual companions is not at all far fetched and may well be the ultimate personification of technology.

Early adopters, what are you doing???

YOUR HEALTH DEFINES HOW BEAUTIFUL YOU ARE

There’s this website of Emerge Skin Care Inc. that I checked out lately and agreed to make this sponsored post.

Personally I have always been adamant of cosmetics products sellers who prey on people’s insecurity about their looks. I mean they tell us indirectly, in their ads, that even the most attractive people (whom they use as endorsers) are anxious of the way they look and so use their products. What they really mean to say is that the likes of you and me, (who are only mildly attractive, but attractive nonetheless) have the more reason to get insecure and rush to buy their products while supplies last!

Good thing Emerge Skin Care is not at all like that. The company’s product and marketing formulas “combine well-being with the latest in technology for a double effect on body and mind.” I don’t know abou you but I sure do like the sound of that because I have always believed that…

The Truly Beautiful People Are Those Who Are Healthy Both in Body and Mind

Cosmetics products will make you look interesting but not beautiful. Unless of course you belive all the advertising lies and wiles they force on the TV screen and ad billboards. If it suits you to buy an expesive product to relieve you of your insecurities, go ahead, make your day. Fool yourself in front of the mirror. But deep inside you’re saying to yourself, “Who are you fooling, dear?” It just won’t do the trick. And yes, it is an unhealthy practice. It’s like each time you put on the make-up, you are telling yourself:

“I AM NOT BEAUTIFUL so I might as well hide behind these COSMETICS”.

Fortunately, a growing number of intelligent women (and men too) no longer live by this crap. They are smarting to the wiles of advertisers and look to health and wellbeing as the true measure of beauty.

Consequently, a growing number of skin health experts are now emerging to offer people an alternative. Emerge Skin Care, Inc. is one such organization founded by a team of dermatologists and chemists who were also behind some of the top leading brands in the skin care industry. They say their skin care system is based on the medical knowledge of how substances interact and how they affect the skin. They therefore created products that are are natural and free from synthetic chemicals, fragrances and preservatives.

Emerge Skin Care products have been formulated, tested and used by leading physicians around the world in the treatment of skin related problems.

Do check out their product line. They just might have the skin health products you are looking for. My friendly advice is, just don’t go beyond what is natural.

Their online catalog includes the price. Your payment options are CHASE Paymentech, Paypal, and Google Checkout.

LIGHTNING KILLED 37 PEOPLE IN CHINA

China’s central government website (www.gov.cn), says lightning was the main cause of death among 48 victims who died after storms swept up the Yangtze River valley and across southern China recently.

These include, five people building a tomb in Zhejiang, twelve farmers in Jiangxi while they were working in their fields. Also in Jianxi, lightning struck a grandmother and her grandson... when they sought shelter from rain under a corrugated iron roof. Two city residents in the province also died from lightning strikes as they huddled together under a tree (source).

Meantime, sizzling temperatures in Europe claimed the lives of 44 people, while in Pakistan, a powerful cyclone killed 18 persons.

THE WORLD WOULD END IN 53 YEARS

That’s according to Isaac Newton, the father of modern physics and astronomy.

In what is turning out to be quite a revelation, an exhibit by Jerusalem's Hebrew University shows that Newton was more odd (or well-rounded depending on your orientation) than his publicist of old would have him remembered by people.

The public exhibit entitled "Newton's Secrets" puts on display previously unpublished writings of Newton including his dabbling in theology and biblical prophecy.

To quote the AFP:

“Working from verses in the Book of Daniel, the elaborator of the classical laws of gravity, motion and optics argued that the world would end 1,260 years after the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire in Western Europe in 800 AD.”

Interestingly, this would suggest that Newton believed the Holy Roman Empire to be the fulfillment of the “abomination that maketh desolate”, which was supposed to mark the beginning of “one thousand two hundred and ninety days” till “all these things shall be finished” spoken of in Chapter 12 of the book of Daniel.

Although I agree that the Holy Roman Empire was abominable to some extent (mainly due to its close association with Catholic Popes), I would have to disagree with Newton’s interpretation in the light of Brother Eli Soriano’s own explanation of Daniel 12:11, (which, I’m not about to divulge).

I reserve my final say on the matter until after I have read Newton’s full explanation. It should be juicy reading! Imagine, no less than the father of modern physics and astronomy falling flat on his face when it comes to biblical understanding.
